What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which the teeth are removed from their sockets. Depending on the complexity of your individual case, you may require either a simple or surgical extraction. Simple extractions are most often performed on teeth that have become loose or visible in the mouth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or trauma.
Surgical extractions, however, are typically needed if the teeth are impacted (i.e. not visible in the mouth) or partially broken off below the gum line. In either case, our team will be able to provide you with the best possible care and advice for a successful outcome.
Reasons for Tooth Extractions
The most common reasons for tooth extractions include infection, overcrowding, and wisdom tooth impaction. If a tooth is severely infected or decayed, it may need to be extracted to prevent the spread of bacteria and/or damage to surrounding teeth. Additionally, if your mouth is overcrowded due to extra teeth or misalignment, extracting a tooth may be beneficial for both cosmetic and health reasons. Finally, wisdom tooth removal is typically necessary to prevent overcrowding and misalignment of your other teeth, as well as reduce the risk of infection.
When is Wisdom Tooth Removal Necessary?
Wisdom teeth, sometimes called third molars, generally come in anywhere from ages 17 to 25. Most people do not have room for the wisdom teeth so they don’t often come in correctly. Wisdom teeth are also difficult to take care of because they are so far back in your mouth.
For young patients, even if there aren’t any complications from the wisdom teeth, it is often recommended to have them removed while the patient is young and vital. This of course should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Some reasons older adult patients may need to have their wisdom teeth out is because of infection, decay, random pain, damage to a second molar, swelling, chewing on tissue and other orthodontic or restorative issues.
The Tooth Extraction Process
At Silver Screen Dental, we offer a variety of sedation dentistry options to ensure that your procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. We also use advanced tools to minimize tissue trauma and reduce recovery time. Depending on the type of tooth extraction that you need, we may also recommend preventive measures such as antibiotics or other medications prior to the procedure.
Following sedation, Dr. Booth will use forceps, or other specialty instruments, to gently loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. Afterward stitches may be applied to help close the wound and keep bacteria out, while gauze is used to reduce bleeding.
Once the tooth has been extracted, we’ll provide you with instructions for post-operative care and pain management. We may also suggest various restorative dentistry treatments such as a dental bridge or implant to replace your missing tooth.
Tooth Extraction Healing Process
Your tooth extraction healing process can last a few days up to a few weeks, depending on the type of procedure and your individual dental health. During this time, we recommend that you:
- Get plenty of rest
- Eat soft foods and avoid straws or chewing gum
- Take any medications prescribed by Dr. Booth
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water
- Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol
- Keep your head elevated when sleeping
By following these instructions and coming in for follow-up visits, you can help ensure that your wisdom tooth removal or other extraction procedure goes as smoothly as possible.
Does Insurance Cover Tooth Extraction?
In most cases, yes. Most dental insurance plans in Texas will cover at least part of the costs associated with a tooth extraction procedure. Depending on your policy and the complexity of your tooth extraction or wisdom tooth removal, you may be eligible for partial or full coverage.
